Repair

Heat pump problems we fix

A heat pump heats and cools, so when one acts up you can lose both. We diagnose on site and give you a flat-rate price before any work starts.

  • Blowing cool air in heat mode
  • Stuck in defrost, or thick ice on the outdoor unit
  • Running nonstop but not keeping up
  • Backup or emergency heat running more than it should
  • Outdoor unit not starting
  • Loud noises from the outdoor unit
Installation

New heat pumps, sized right

Every new system is sized with a Manual J load calculation, not a rule of thumb or a like-for-like swap. Most installs take one to two days.

We're a Bryant dealer and install other major brands too. Estimates on replacements are free. See HVAC installation for how we work.

  • Standard and variable-speed heat pumps
  • Ductless mini-splits
  • Replacements for aging heat pumps
Repair or replace

When to replace instead of repair

If your heat pump is under 10 years old, repair usually makes sense. Past 12 to 15 years, or when the repair is close to half the cost of a new system, replacement is usually the better call. We'll show you both numbers.

FAQ

Common questions

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air?

In winter a heat pump briefly blows cool air during its defrost cycle, which is normal. If it keeps blowing cool air, common causes are low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve, or a thermostat setting. We diagnose on site so the right part gets fixed.

Is ice on my heat pump normal?

A light coat of frost in cold weather is normal, and the defrost cycle clears it. A thick block of ice that doesn't clear is not. Switch the thermostat to emergency heat and call us.

Do heat pumps work in Northern Virginia winters?

Yes. Modern heat pumps handle typical Northern Virginia winters. On the coldest nights, backup heat from electric heat strips or a gas furnace helps carry the load.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

Most residential installs take one to two days.

Do you work on all heat pump brands?

Yes. We repair heat pumps from every major manufacturer. For new installs we're a Bryant dealer and install other major brands too.
